MEET MIKE FANNING
State Senator Mike Fanning was elected to the South Carolina Senate in 2016, representing District 17. His district includes Chester, Fairfield, and York Counties.
After serving in the United States Army where he was stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington, Senator Fanning returned home to South Carolina where he graduated from Wofford College, Class of 1991. After graduating with a Bachelor's Degree, he went on to earn a Teaching Education Certification from Benedict College, and his MS, Ed.S, and a Ph.D from the University of South Carolina.
He began his career as an educator, teaching at Estill High School, and then Columbia High School. He earned a number of awards during his tenure as a teacher, including First Year Teacher of the Year for Hampton County School District Two in 1993, Sallie Mae First Year Teacher of the Year Award State Winner/National Representative in 1993, Westinghouse STAR Teacher of the Year in 1993, Key Club Teacher of the Year for Richland County School District One in 1996, and Estelle Parrott Teacher of the Year for Richland County School District One in 1996. When Senator Fanning isn’t at the State House, he now works to provide crucial professional development and programming for teachers in his area as the Executive Director of the Olde English Consortium.
Since being elected to the State Legislature, Senator Fanning has established himself as a strong, leading voice on education reform and as an advocate for public school teachers. He serves on the Agriculture and Natural Resources; Corrections and Penology; Family and Veterans' Services; Fish, Game and Forestry; and Judiciary Committees.
Senator Fanning’s service to his community spans far beyond his role as a State Senator. He has been an active member of the South Carolina and Fairfield NAACP, serves on the SCEA Children's Foundation Board of Directors, serves on the Board of Directors for the 100 Men Group, and has been a member of Fairfield United, the Chester Chamber of Commerce, Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, Rock Hill/York County Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the Greater York Chamber of Commerce. Fanning has also a Richard W. Riley South Carolina Diversity Leadership Initiative Fellow at Furman University, and a Former Sunday School Teacher & Men's Council President at Lebanon Presbyterian Church.
